Orthodontic care
Adult Orthodontics in NW Portland
Straightening your teeth as an adult is more discreet and more comfortable than it was a decade ago. Whether you're in your 20s or your 50s, it's genuinely never too late to start.
Plenty of adults assume they missed their window for orthodontics, or that fixing things would mean years in a mouthful of metal. Neither has to be true. Today's options — clear aligners, tooth-colored ceramic braces, and low-profile metal braces — let many adults straighten their smile without it broadcasting to a conference room or a first date. Treatment is often more efficient than people expect, too, because it's built around your goals rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.
At Bridge City Orthodontics in NW Portland, Dr. Alex Vo starts every adult case with a comfortable 3D digital scan instead of goopy impressions, then walks you through your realistic options and honest pricing. We look at the whole picture, too — building a plan around your goals rather than treating teeth in isolation. The goal is a plan that fits your career, your calendar, and the smile you actually want.

Common questions
Am I too old for braces or clear aligners?
No — it's never too late. A large share of orthodontic patients are adults, and healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. Many adults are motivated by a long-standing concern or by teeth that have shifted over the years. The first step is a free consultation to see which options fit your goals, your bite, and your schedule.
What's the most discreet treatment option for adults?
Clear aligners are the most popular discreet choice because they're removable and hard to notice, and ceramic (tooth-colored) braces are a low-profile alternative when braces are the better fit. The right option depends on your bite — Dr. Vo reviews your 3D scan and recommends the most discreet approach that will still meet your treatment goals.
How long does adult orthodontic treatment take?
Many adults are in treatment around 12–24 months, with simpler cases finishing faster and complex cases running longer. Adult treatment can sometimes take a little more time because the bones are no longer growing. After a comfortable 3D scan, Dr. Vo gives you a personalized estimate. (Timelines are estimates and vary by case.)
Can adults correct a narrow upper jaw without surgery?
Sometimes. A treatment called MARPE (miniscrew-assisted palatal expansion) may offer a non-surgical expansion option for appropriately selected adults, because it anchors to the palate rather than only the teeth. Whether it's an option for you depends on a 3D evaluation, which Dr. Vo reviews with you. It isn't right for every case.
Will orthodontic treatment fit around my job?
That's exactly how we plan it. We keep appointments efficient and try to schedule around your work calendar, and discreet options like aligners and ceramic braces mean treatment doesn't have to be obvious in professional settings. Many adults find the day-to-day far easier than they expected.
Does insurance cover orthodontics for adults?
Often, at least in part. Many dental plans include a lifetime orthodontic benefit for adults as well as children. Benefits vary by plan, so our team can help verify your PPO orthodontic benefit before you start, and we'll file your claims for you. You'll get exact, all-in pricing at your free consultation.
Is treatment worthwhile if I had braces as a teen?
For many people, yes. Teeth can drift over the years — often because a retainer wasn't worn long-term — and a shorter course of treatment can bring them back into line. Sometimes a limited plan is all that's needed. A free consultation will tell you what, if anything, makes sense for your situation.
