Early & Phase 1 Orthodontics for Growing Kids in NW Portland

Some bite and jaw issues are easier to guide while your child is still growing. At Bridge City Orthodontics in NW Portland, Dr. Alex Vo gives kids a calm, no-cost first look around age 7 — and tells you honestly whether anything is needed yet.

Early treatment — often called Phase 1 or interceptive orthodontics — is care that happens while a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth, typically between ages 7 and 10. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7, not because most kids need braces that young, but because it's a good window to spot things like crossbites, crowding, narrow arches, protruding front teeth, or developing jaw-growth patterns early. Guiding these while the jaw is still developing can sometimes make later treatment simpler or shorter, and in some cases may reduce what's needed down the road.

Dr. Vo's approach is deliberately low-key and honest. Many children who come in for an early visit simply need monitoring as they grow, and we're glad to watch and wait rather than start treatment your child doesn't need. When Phase 1 care does make sense, we use comfortable 3D digital scans (no goopy impressions) to plan precisely, and we keep appointments efficient so your NW Portland family isn't living at the orthodontist.

Why patients choose it

  • Helps guide jaw and arch growth while it's still happening, which can sometimes reduce the need for more involved treatment later
  • Addresses crossbites, narrow arches, and harmful bite patterns at an age when they're often easier to treat
  • Can create room for adult teeth coming in, which may make any future treatment shorter and simpler
  • Addresses habits like thumb-sucking or mouth breathing that can affect how teeth and jaws develop
  • Builds your child's comfort with the orthodontist early, so future care feels familiar, not scary
  • Gives you a clear, honest answer on timing — including 'nothing needed yet' — at no cost

What to expect

  1. 1

Free first exam around age 7

Dr. Vo gently checks your child's bite, jaw growth, and how adult teeth are coming in — often with a quick 3D scan instead of messy impressions. There's no cost and no pressure.

  2. 2

    Honest recommendation

You'll get a straight answer: monitor and re-check as they grow, or begin a focused Phase 1 plan now. We explain the why in plain language so you can decide with confidence.

  3. 3

Focused Phase 1 treatment (only if needed)

If early care is warranted, treatment is usually short and targeted — for example an expander, partial braces, or a space maintainer — to address a specific issue while growth is on your side.

  4. 4

    Growth monitoring & next steps

After Phase 1, we keep an eye on your child's development at periodic check-ins and let you know if and when a second, comprehensive phase may make sense down the road.

A good fit if…

  • NW Portland kids around age 7 who have never had an orthodontic check-up
  • Children with crossbites, very crowded or protruding front teeth, or a narrow upper jaw
  • Kids whose top and bottom jaws don't seem to line up, or who shift their jaw to bite
  • Children with lingering thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing habits that may affect tooth and jaw growth
  • Parents who want an honest, watch-and-wait opinion before committing to any treatment

Common questions

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up by age 7. By then your child usually has a mix of baby and adult teeth, which lets Dr. Vo evaluate how the jaws and bite are developing. Most kids this age won't need treatment yet — the visit is about catching anything worth watching early. At Bridge City, this first exam is always free, so there's no downside to coming in.

Does an early visit mean my child needs braces now?

Usually not. Many children who come in around age 7 simply need monitoring as they grow. We'll only recommend Phase 1 treatment when there's a clear, time-sensitive reason — like a crossbite or a narrow jaw that's often easier to address while your child is still growing. If nothing is needed, we'll tell you exactly that and re-check at future visits at no cost.

What's the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 treatment?

Phase 1 (early/interceptive) treatment happens while baby teeth are still present and targets a specific problem — for example, widening a narrow arch or guiding jaw growth. Phase 2 is comprehensive treatment with full braces or Invisalign once most adult teeth are in, typically in the teen years. Not every child who has Phase 1 will need Phase 2, and many kids skip Phase 1 entirely and only need one round of treatment as a teen. Dr. Vo will recommend the simplest path that fits your child.

What does Phase 1 treatment actually involve?

It depends on the issue, but Phase 1 is usually short and focused — often somewhere in the range of several months to about a year, though every child is different. Common appliances include a palatal expander to widen a narrow upper jaw, partial braces on a few teeth, or a space maintainer. Your orthodontist will walk you through the specific plan, including what to expect and a realistic estimate of how long it should take.

Is the first exam really free, and where are you located?

Yes — your child's first consultation with Dr. Vo is free, with no obligation. Our office is in NW Portland, convenient from across NW Portland. You can book online or give us a call, and we're happy to answer questions before you come in.

Will my child be comfortable during the visit?

That's a priority for us. We keep the first visit relaxed and kid-friendly, and we use 3D digital scanning instead of the old goopy impression trays, which most kids find much more comfortable. A positive early experience helps orthodontic care feel familiar rather than intimidating if your child needs treatment down the road.
